Q
& A with Wil Martin, Vocals and Mike Callahan, Rhythm
guitar
|
SW:
Alright this is Andy from Schwegweb and can you guys introduce
yourselves.
I'm Mike and I'm Wil
SW: And what do you guys do in the band?
W: Well I sing
M: And I play guitar and sing sometimes
SW:
You guys are all of very different areas, where did you guys
meet and how did you end up forming the band?
M: Well we all came to Los Angeles at different times in our
lives I mean and we all just met there. We all met from being
around in different bands and had a mutual respect for each
other and it naturally kinda happened.
SW:
So how long have you guys been together as a band?
W: About three years So you guys have been doing the indie
scene for a while then? W: Yeah just playing the clubs of
LA with the million of other bands.
SW:
Then how did you guys land the deal?
W: You wanna tell them?
M: Well it's not really an exciting story it's mostly.. Wil
has some extrodinary networking skills in the music bizz,
he's pretty good at that stuff and you know it came in handy
and he came into contact with the right people and got the
music to the right people that could make a difference. We
found a good home at Warner Bros.
SW:
So how's the recording process different then, you guys just
recorded your new album, so how is it different from recording
with indie labels?
W: Well we weren't on an indie label before, we just played
around town and recorded demos at like friends houses and
studios and we only did that one time with one song which
actually spawned all the label interest. And it's obvious
recording in someone's basement to a multi million-dollar
studio because you need the space and some of the technology
to be able to pick up the various different things and instruments.
SW:
So you get a crisper sound and everything gets picked up?
M: Exactly and you just have more time as well like when you
are recording in your friend's basement you only have hours.
W: And there's only so much you can do, your creativity ends
at a certain point, much sooner than when you have everything
at your disposal.
SW:
So is this your guy's first national tour then?
W: No it's the second
SW:
What was the tour before?
M: We just did a pressure 4-5 and Hoobastank tour, it was
really great both bands are awesome and they are great guys
and we had a great time with that one.
SW:
And how's this tour going, being on Snocore?
M: It's a blast, we are having a great time.
W: We're having an awesome time. Sometimes it's a cold blast.
SW:
So what has been the best city so far for you guys as response
to your music?
M: That's a tough one because every show has been a good one
W: Yeah, they all have been really great… ummm the only one
that I would say that has been somewhat of a challenge would
be New York City, we had a good response but we had some….
SW:
Oh, I think I heard about that. Someone threw something at
you guys?
W: Yeah, it's been really funny though because a lot of the
people from the show have been posting on our website apologizing.
It's cool, we don't take it personally because we used to
throw things up on stage, not because we didn't like them
but because you gte in the moment and you just want them to
have something of yours so you can say, "Dude! They got my….yeah!"
but you don't want glass bottles.
M: I don't think it was a reflection of the crowd as a whole,
it was just a small group of people doing those things
SW:
Yeah, just a bunch of assholes.
M: Yeah, so it wasn't the whole crowd, "YEAH! AHH!!"
W: It happens to the best of us. Everyone pretty much experiences
negative reaction at some point in time.
SW:
This question is a little off topic but what CD are you guys
listen to the most?
W: I'm listening to the Coldplay record a lot actually; I
really dig that record a lot. But I mean the only time I listen
to music is when I'm going to bed and that record musically
is also relaxing and makes you go to sleep.
M: Ummm… lately I've been listening to our drummer, Dieter's
metal compliation that he puts in the CD player here and just
cranks it up in the front lounge and it's just a bunch of
good rock and metal that gets us fired up like before we go
on stage like Motorhead. Oh the good old stuff.
SW:
So you have a damn nice tour bus?
W: Thank you
M: You should've seen our last one that we had, you wouldn't
want to come on it.
W: It was a 1968 bus, it was something out of like Scooby
Doo. It
was like the mystery machine.
M: It had been described as a crack house on wheels, that's
what it looked like.
SW:
So this is nice and luxury for you guys ?
M: Oh yeah, when we got on this we were like thank god! Because
on the last one we'd try to have people come up on the bus
to hang out and they would get scared and just leave.
W: They'd think we were serial killers on a killing spree.
M: It was really scary, but it ran and it got us places, it
just wasn't much to look at.
SW:
Well here's another question a little off beat but what is
your guy's dream tour?
W: That's easy…. Metallica, we are huge Metallica fans.
SW:
What do you guys think what's happening with them lately?
W: You know, it's sad. There's been a lot of things happening
with that band but their next record will be awesome, they're
due.
SW:
With so many bands in the LA area, which ones have helped
you the most through the local scene?
W: Oddly enough, very good friends of mine that helped us
tremendously was Crazytown. I mean we aren't the same musically
but they are a great bunch of guys and they help greatly.
And Fear Factory and company, Jay Gordon from Orgy also helped…
so we had a lot of love.
SW:
What are you guys doing in the spare time besides play music?
M: We play video games a bit. We do have the X Box and PS2.
W: And we like to punch each other a lot.
M: There are some wounds right here on my knuckles, we do
that a lot.
SW:
And what about back home? 9-5 jobs? Or just focusing on the
music?
W: At home we still like to beat each other up.
SW:
So do you guys live together back home? Or Separately?
W: Yeah separately M: I don't think we could handle that.
I mean not like we don't love each other but we get to live
with each other all during touring. It's good to have that
separation.
SW:
Well thanks for the interview and good luck on the rest of
the tour.
W: Thanks
M: Thanks a lot.
