Three
Days Grace, despite the fact they have met TRL success,
are actually quiet a good band. Usually, when a band has
a few hit singles, you might as well not get the album because
the best songs have been overplayed on the radio. Not true
with Three Days Grace, and it wouldn’t surprise me
if they release quite a few more top singles, because the
album is full of catchy songs.
The
best song on the album is the radio hit “I Hate Everything
About You” (but that doesn’t mean that there
aren’t close seconds). I was a bit skeptical that
such a refrain could compete with Ugly Kid Joe’s take
on hating everything, but Three Days Grace’s holds
up nicely. It’s a great break up song. In fact, pretty
much all of the songs on this album set an I’m-unhappy-in-my-relationship-but-dependant-on-you
type feel to it. But that’s okay because it’s
the presentation that counts. This isn’t an emo album
it’s a rock album so the whole semi-bitter-semi-senitmental
succeeds for these guys with out being too monotonous or
irritating. When Adam Gontier is complaining it works because
at least he's not whining he signing and he is pretty good
at it. Supported by catchy melodic riffs and solid but not
amazing drumming, these guys have made a good album.
Overall this
record is worth listening to if you are into the mainstream
rock scene. The album is heavy on the production end and
might have sounded better had they left it a little grittier
sounding. Heavy Guitar riffs need to be left heavy and not
smoothed out to match the Goniters’ smoother vocals.
But got to keep the top 40 folk’s happy, so like most
bands, Three Days Grace leans more to a commercial appeal.
