Mainstream metal seems to be the big thing nowadays, but what happens when you combine a punk sound with aggressive guitars? You get The Used's new self titled CD from Reprise. The first thing you notice about The Used, is that they have an unusual punk/metal sound to them. Somewhat along the lines of Glassjaw, singer Bert McCracken has a high pitched tone that is usually found in more punk/emo type music. Tons of emotion is released through each magnificently crafted song. The lyrics are very nicely integrated within. The choruses are very easy to pick up and sing along to. The not so heavy but aggressive feeling is fairly unique, showing that there is plenty of new things to look forward to in metal.

The CD's distinct sound could be a bit of a detriment as well. Those who are looking for the next big heavy mosh pit fuelled CD won't find what they're looking for here. Instead, this CD aims toward someone looking for more intricate sounds and emotion through the music. Being on Ozzfest this year is also a great way to expose the band to many new listeners, but similar to other bands on the bill like Seether, it may not be the best place to find the crowd they are looking for, but you never know.

The Used is a good CD that should be listened to at least once by everyone. After that first listen, you decide if you want to do it again. Again, don't forget to check these guys out at Ozzfest 2002.
